About the Series

The "American Common Sense" series originated from Dr. Cleon Skousen's "The U.S. Constitution" course, which he established in the 1960s. Over the subsequent 30 years, this course trained over three million Americans, including dozens of U.S. Senators, hundreds of U.S. Representatives, dozens of governors, and at least two Supreme Court Justices.

In the summer of 2023, Professor Paul Skousen, Cleon's son, partnered with American common sense scholar Fang Wei to launch "The U.S. Constitution" course for the first time to Chinese speakers worldwide, helping them grasp the path to America's prosperity and strength.

The "American Common Sense" series and courses complement each other. We are progressively publishing easy-to-understand Chinese versions. About the Authors

Dr. Cleon Skousen (1913-2006) was a renowned speaker, teacher, and author. He wrote dozens of books, including bestsellers like "The Naked Communist" and "The 5000 Year Leap." He also founded the National Center for Constitutional Studies, lecturing on the Constitution in every U.S. state and over forty countries, teaching more than three million people. He held a Juris Doctor degree from George Washington University and served as a section chief and public speaker for the FBI.

Paul Skousen is an American constitutional scholar, author, and university professor with extensive and in-depth research on the U.S. Constitution and the socialization of America. He served in the CIA and as a White House intelligence officer for President Reagan. He holds a Master's degree in National Security Studies from Georgetown University and a degree in Journalism from Brigham Young University. He has authored 15 books.

Fang Wei is a seasoned media professional, American common sense scholar, and high-tech expert, with over 30 years of experience in the technology and media industries. He has founded multiple media and technology companies, hosted and participated in programs such as "Fang Wei Time," "Into America," and the large-scale historical series "Stories of American History," conducting in-depth research on American history and contemporary affairs. Fang Wei graduated from Fudan University in Shanghai and earned a Master's degree in Computer Science from the University of Iowa in the United States.

Foreword

In the 1960s, a Black organization that advocated communist violent revolution, the Black Panther Party, was active in Oakland, California, and other places. They launched violent attacks in over a hundred cities and were consequently sought and arrested by the FBI. One of their leaders, Eldridge Cleaver, fled to Cuba to evade capture, then traveled to Algeria, North Korea, China, and the Soviet Union, among other communist countries. Wherever he went, he was treated as an "anti-American hero." However, after several years in exile, he walked into the U.S. Embassy in the Soviet Union and surrendered. He told embassy officials, "I'd rather be in prison in America than a free man in these communist countries!"

How did such a transformation occur? It turned out that during his exile, Cleaver discovered a problem: the people in those communist countries all lived very poorly, whether in Eastern Europe or China. Those who could escape wanted to, and not a single communist country was prosperous. In contrast, he realized that his own life in America had been quite good.

Although Cleaver willingly returned to prison in the U.S., some questions still puzzled him. So, after his release, he visited the renowned constitutional scholar Dr. Cleon Skousen and posed three questions:

First, why is America's political system more successful than that of communist countries?
Second, why is America's economy more prosperous than that of communist countries?
Third, since America's politics and economy are so successful, why is American culture so failing, leading young people to despise America?

Cleaver certainly found the right person, as Dr. Skousen dispelled his confusion and found the answers. After completing Dr. Skousen's "The U.S. Constitution" course, Cleaver remarked with emotion, "If I had taken this course back then, I would never have become a communist. I would have loved America because I would have known the secret that made her great."

Dr. Cleon Skousen and his son, Professor Paul Skousen, have studied the U.S. Constitution for nearly a century, from 1930 to the present, deeply grasping its essence. Professor Skousen shared Cleaver's story with the students and provided the answers to his three questions.

Professor Skousen said that in 1831, French thinker Alexis de Tocqueville traveled to America and observed that even American children were familiar with the U.S. Constitution. He saw this as the secret to America's political and economic success. From the landing at Jamestown in 1607 to the Constitutional Convention in 1787, Americans spent a full 180 years crafting this Constitution. After that, America embarked on a path of rapid development. Another 150 years later, America became the most prosperous and powerful nation in the world.

So, how did American culture begin to fail?

Before 1887, there were almost no illiterates in America. However, by 1887, John Dewey, often called the "father of progressive education," advocated abandoning America's path to success and changing course. His plan included: stopping the teaching of the Constitution and faith, and preventing parents from disciplining their children, among other things. These led to the decline of American culture. The America where everyone was once literate now has 32 million illiterates.

And there is something even more alarming. As early as 1961, Dr. Cleon Skousen exposed 45 communist goals to subvert America. Many people did not believe him at the time. Now, people have discovered that 44 of these goals have been achieved or partially achieved. For example: promoting sexual liberation and transgenderism, dismantling traditional marriage, and so on.

Successful Chinese Americans interviewed by Fang Wei also share the same confusion and concern: Faced with the current chaos and value conflicts in America, how should we understand and deal with them? How should we protect our children? This "U.S. Constitution" course and the "American Common Sense Series" can help you find complete answers.
