About the Series

The "American Common Sense" series originated from Dr. Cleon Skousen's "The U.S. Constitution" course, which he founded in the 1960s. Over the subsequent 30 years, this course trained over three million Americans, including dozens of federal senators, hundreds of federal representatives, dozens of governors, and at least two Supreme Court justices.

In the summer of 2023, Professor Paul Skousen, Cleon Skousen's son, partnered with American common sense scholar Fang Wei to offer "The U.S. Constitution" course for the first time to Chinese people globally, helping them grasp the secrets to America's prosperity and strength.

The "American Common Sense" series and courses complement each other. We are progressively releasing simplified Chinese versions. By reading this series, you will gain insight into the true meaning of freedom and prosperity, and better defend your and your descendants' freedom and rights.

About the Authors

Dr. Cleon Skousen (1913-2006) was a renowned speaker, teacher, and author. He wrote dozens of books, including bestsellers such as "The Naked Communist" and "The 5000 Year Leap." He also founded the National Center for Constitutional Studies, lectured in various states across the U.S. and over forty countries, teaching "The Constitution" to more than three million people. He held a Doctor of Juridical Science (J.S.D.) degree from George Washington University and previously served as a section chief and public speaker for the FBI.

Paul Skousen is an American constitutional scholar, author, and university professor with extensive and in-depth research into the U.S. Constitution and the American socialization process. He previously worked for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and served as President Reagan's White House intelligence officer. He holds a Master's degree in National Security Studies from Georgetown University and a degree in Journalism from Brigham Young University. He has authored 15 books.

Fang Wei is a veteran media professional, American common sense scholar, and high-tech specialist. With over 30 years in the tech and media industries, he founded several media and tech companies, and hosted and participated in programs such as "Fang Wei Time," "Into America," and the large-scale history program "Stories of American History." He has conducted in-depth research into American history and contemporary affairs. Fang Wei graduated from Fudan University in Shanghai and earned a Master's degree in Computer Science from the University of Iowa in the United States.

Foreword

In the 1960s, in Oakland, California, and other places, an organization that revered communist violent revolution, the Black Panther Party, was active. They launched violent attacks in over a hundred cities and were consequently pursued and arrested by the FBI. One of their leaders, Eldridge Cleaver, fled to Cuba to avoid capture, and later traveled through Algeria, North Korea, China, and the Soviet Union, among other communist countries. Everywhere he went, he was treated as an "anti-American hero." However, after several years in exile, he surrendered himself at the U.S. Embassy in the Soviet Union. He told embassy officials, "I would rather be in jail in America than be a free man in these communist countries!"

How did such a change come about? It turned out that during his exile, Cleaver discovered a problem—people in those communist countries lived very poorly, whether in Eastern Europe or China; those who could escape wanted to. No communist country was able to prosper. In contrast, he found that his own life in America had been quite good.

Although Cleaver was willing to go to jail in America, some questions still puzzled him. So, after his release, he visited the renowned constitutional scholar Dr. Cleon Skousen and posed three questions:

First, why is America's political system more successful than that of communist countries?
Second, why is America's economy more prosperous than that of communist countries?
Third, since America's politics and economy are so successful, why is American culture so unsuccessful, leading young people to despise America?

Cleaver indeed found the right person. Dr. Skousen shed light on the issues and helped him find the answers. After completing Dr. Skousen's "The U.S. Constitution" course, Cleaver remarked, "If I had taken this course back then, I would never have become a communist. I would have loved America because I would have known the secret that made her great."

Dr. Cleon Skousen and his son, Professor Paul Skousen, have studied the U.S. Constitution for nearly a century since 1930, profoundly understanding its essence, making them rare and exceptional mentors on the U.S. Constitution. Their co-authored book, "The 5000 Year Leap: 28 Great Ideas that Changed the World," once became a bestseller, profoundly influencing modern America.

In the summer of 2023, Professor Paul Skousen and American common sense scholar and veteran media personality Fang Wei jointly launched "The U.S. Constitution" course, open for enrollment to Chinese people worldwide for the first time. Professor Skousen shared Cleaver's story with the students and provided answers to his three questions.

Professor Skousen said that in 1831, French philosopher Alexis de Tocqueville traveled to America and discovered that even American children were familiar with the U.S. Constitution, which he saw as the secret to America's political and economic success. From the landing at Jamestown in 1607 to the Constitutional Convention in 1787, Americans spent a full 180 years crafting this Constitution. After that, America embarked on a path of rapid development. Another 150 years later, America became the most prosperous and powerful nation in the world.

So, how did American culture begin to fail?

Before 1887, there were virtually no illiterates in America. However, by 1887, John Dewey, known as the "father of progressive education," advocated abandoning America's path to success and changing course. His plan included: stopping constitutional and religious education, preventing parents from disciplining their children, and so on. These led to the decline of American culture. Once a nation where everyone was literate, today, 32 million Americans are illiterate.

There's even more alarming news. As early as 1961, Dr. Cleon Skousen exposed 45 goals of the communists to subvert America. Many people didn't believe it at the time. Now, people realize that 44 of these goals have been achieved or partially achieved. For example: promoting sexual liberation and transgenderism, dismantling traditional marriage, etc.

Successful Chinese Americans interviewed by Fang Wei also share similar confusion and concerns: In the face of the current chaos and conflicting values in America, how should we understand and deal with them? How should we protect our children? This "U.S. Constitution" course and the "American Common Sense Series" will help you find comprehensive answers.

Of course, the aforementioned issues are not unique to America. Therefore, this course and series are not created exclusively for Americans.
