Fragile Freedom
"It is a universal truth that the loss of liberty at the hands of those in power is more often gradual and insidious than sudden or violent."
— James Madison, September 28, 1820
"The legitimate masters of the people of the United States are the Congress and the courts, not to overthrow the Constitution, but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution."
— Abraham Lincoln, September 17, 1859
"Freedom is a fragile thing and is never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not something that is inherited; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation. For a nation, freedom is enjoyed only once. Once lost, it never returns."
— Ronald Reagan, January 5, 1967
Introduction
The Crisis Facing America
Over the past century, the United States, as a bastion of freedom and human rights, has seen its walls continuously crumble. There is abundant evidence that America is in crisis. Hundreds of books and thousands of articles reveal this fact. At the same time, many Americans have also become corrupt:
·They view welfare as a constitutional right but refuse to bear corresponding personal responsibilities.
·They have lost patriotic cohesion, abandoning the strong will to protect and prosper the nation.
·They have grown arrogant, believing themselves superior to time-tested traditional values; they think that the familiar American way of life cannot be destroyed; they consider those who believe in God or abide by the law to be trapped in an outdated lifestyle, to be replaced by a "more lenient and inclusive" approach.
·They are gradually forgetting America's "Manifest Destiny," which once inspired millions of Americans to bravely fight, and even die, to defend the freedoms we cherish.
·They are divided in almost all areas. Communists and socialists sow discord, causing people to fight over issues such as politics, patriotism, religion, race, gender, income, and values. Adhering to personal beliefs can lead to losing jobs, positions, punishment, and even the loss of equal protection under the law and freedom.
As early as 1962, FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover stated: "In recent years, symbols of patriotism have often been discarded. They disparage our national heroes and distort our history. Is it shameful to pledge allegiance to our flag, sign an oath of loyalty, or salute our national anthem? Is it shameful to encourage our children to recite the inspiring words of the founders of 1776? Has it become offensive to say 'we believe in God' when proclaiming our love for our country?" "In history, every strong nation has lived by ideals and died when those ideals crumbled…"
Dangerous Precedents
Even more terrifying is that a new generation will默認 the current state as normal, unaware of how precious the lost freedoms truly are. Founding Father Thomas Jefferson warned: "One act of deviation from principle will become a precedent for the next, and so on, until the majority are reduced to miserable puppets, feeling nothing but evil and pain."
Founding Father Alexander Hamilton also foresaw the process of eroding freedom. He said: "It is a common situation for free peoples, during intense conflicts, to introduce certain principles and precedents into government due to momentary impulse. These principles and precedents, however, later prove fatal to them."
Preferring to Endure the Status Quo
In the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson stated: "All experience hath shown that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed."
This is an apt description of America today—millions of citizens would rather sacrifice freedom as long as they can obtain the necessities for a comfortable life. Many Americans have fallen into apathy, fear, despair, and dependence on the government. This is precisely what the Founding Fathers desperately tried to avoid.
Most Americans sense that rights are quietly slipping away but cannot pinpoint the exact problem. They desperately exercise their right to vote, hoping for change. Yet, year after year, things remain the same.
A Guide to Saving America
In America today, establishing new safeguards for freedom does not require overthrowing kings and parliaments like the Founding Fathers did in 1776; nor is it merely about putting the right president in the White House, passing the right legislation in Congress, or having the right people on the Supreme Court. Saving America also requires a crucial yet long-neglected force.
Leonard E. Read wrote in 1962: "Freedom must be born again in America. That is to say, we must re-establish it on fundamental principles."
This book is an unreserved guide to saving America. It is prepared for the patriotic elite, including you, who keenly recognize this crisis.
On the path to saving America, our personal lives need to undergo tangible changes. Like seeds sown in fertile ground, great leaders will emerge from individuals, families, and communities who practice correct principles. No matter where seductive voices lead America, eventually, things will reach an extreme, and traditional virtues will rise from the ruins, leading America back to glory.
To restore freedom and recreate prosperity, let us now engage in this battle to save America.
