About the Authors

Paul Skousen is an American constitutional scholar, author, and university professor with extensive and in-depth research on the U.S. Constitution and the socialization of America. He previously worked for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and served as a White House intelligence officer for President Reagan. He holds a master's degree in national security studies from Georgetown University and a journalism degree from Brigham Young University. He has authored 15 books.

Fang Wei is a veteran media professional, American common sense scholar, and high-tech expert. With over 30 years in the technology and media industries, he has founded multiple media and tech companies. He hosts and participates in programs such as "Fang Wei Time," "Into America," and the large-scale historical series "A History of America," conducting in-depth research on American history and contemporary affairs. Fang Wei graduated from Fudan University in Shanghai and earned a master's degree in computer science from the University of Iowa in the United States.

Foreword

In the early 1830s, French political philosopher Alexis de Tocqueville traveled through the United States to study its emerging democratic system. He was amazed to find that American elementary and middle school students and the general public had a very deep understanding of the Constitution and the American system. Upon returning to France, Tocqueville spent several years writing his acclaimed work, "Democracy in America," which later became a classic study of American politics.

The widespread popular understanding of the U.S. Constitution was largely due to a small booklet published in 1828 titled "A Catechism of the Constitution of the United States." Its author was Arthur J. Stansbury, a Maryland legislator and lawyer. A pastor friend of his expressed great concern that Americans did not understand the Constitution, suggesting it would be excellent if a simple Q&A format could help people profoundly grasp it. Stansbury strongly agreed.

Subsequently, Stansbury, drawing on his professional knowledge and research, combined with the opinions of other legal experts, meticulously compiled this easy-to-understand "A Catechism of the Constitution of the United States." The first edition was a great success, and it was reissued multiple times thereafter, becoming a textbook for elementary, middle, and even universities across the United States. During the American Civil War, it was even distributed to soldiers. It is estimated that from 1828 to the early 20th century, at least several million copies of this book were distributed.
