Fragile Freedom
"It is against a gradual and silent encroach ment of those in power that the people have most to be on their guard."
—James Madison, September 28, 1820
"The people of these United States are the rightful masters of both Congress and courts, not to overthrow the Constitution, but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution."
—Abraham Lincoln, September 17, 1859
"Freedom is a fragile thing and is never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people. And those in world history who have lost it have never known it again."
—Ronald Reagan, January 5, 1967
Introduction
America's Crisis
For nearly a century, the United States, once a bastion of freedom and human rights, has seen its walls steadily crumble. There is abundant evidence that America is in crisis. Hundreds of books and thousands of articles reveal this reality. Concurrently, many Americans have become corrupt:
·They treat welfare as a constitutional right while rejecting corresponding personal responsibilities.
·They have lost patriotic cohesion and the strong will to protect and prosper the nation.
·They have developed an arrogance, believing themselves to be above time-tested traditional values; they think the American way of life they know today cannot be destroyed; they believe that those who believe in God or obey the law are trapped in outdated lifestyles, to be replaced by "more lenient and inclusive" ways.
·They are gradually forgetting America's "Manifest Destiny," which once inspired millions of Americans to bravely fight, and even die, to defend our cherished freedoms.
·They are divided in almost all areas. Communists and socialists exploit these divisions, pitting people against each other over issues such as politics, patriotism, religion, race, gender, income, and values. Adhering to personal beliefs can lead to job loss, demotion, punishment, and even the loss of equal legal protection and freedom.
As early as 1962, FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover stated: "In recent years, symbols of patriotism are often cast aside. They denigrate our national heroes and distort our history. Is it shameful to pledge allegiance to our flag, sign loyalty oaths, or salute our national anthem? Is it disgraceful to encourage our children to recite the inspiring words of our founding fathers from 1776? Has it become objectionable (offensive) to say 'we believe in God' when proclaiming our love for our country?" "Historically, every powerful nation has lived by ideals and died when those ideals crumbled..."
Dangerous Precedents
Even more frightening is that a new generation will normalize the current situation, unaware of the precious freedoms they have lost. Founding Father Thomas Jefferson warned: "One precedent in favor of power is a precedent against liberty, and so on till a majority of the citizens have become the miserable tools of the rest."
Founding Father Alexander Hamilton also foresaw the erosion of freedom. He said, "The commonest cause of disaster to a free people is in the heat of conflict to let their government introduce principles and precedents which afterwards prove fatal to them."
Prefer to Endure the Status Quo
In the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson stated, "all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed."
This accurately describes America today—millions of citizens are willing to sacrifice freedom as long as they can obtain the necessities for a comfortable life. Many Americans have fallen into apathy, fear, despair, and dependence on the government. This is precisely what the Founding Fathers sought to avoid.
Most Americans sense that rights are subtly slipping away but cannot pinpoint the exact problem. They desperately exercise their right to vote, hoping for change. Yet, year after year, things remain the same.
A Guide to Saving America
In America today, establishing new safeguards for freedom does not require overthrowing kings and parliaments as the Founding Fathers did in 1776; nor is it merely about putting the right president in the White House, passing the right legislation in Congress, or having the right people on the Supreme Court. Saving America also requires a crucial yet long-neglected force.
Leonard E. Read wrote in 1962: "Liberty must undergo a rebirth in America. That is to say, we must reestablish it on basic principles."
This book is an unreserved guide to saving America. It is prepared for patriotic elites, including you, who are soberly aware of this crisis.
On the path to saving America, our personal lives need to undergo tangible changes. Like seeds sown in fertile ground, great leaders will emerge from individuals, families, and communities who practice sound principles. No matter where the seductive voices lead America, the pendulum will eventually swing back, and traditional virtues will rise from the ruins to lead America to glory once more.
To restore freedom and prosperity, let us now engage in this battle to save America.
