Fragile Liberty

"It is a universal truth that the loss of liberty at the hands of rulers is generally brought about by gradual encroachments, rather than by violent usurpation."
—James Madison, September 28, 1820

"The people of these United States are the rightful masters of both Congress and courts, not to overthrow the Constitution, but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution."
—Abraham Lincoln, September 17, 1859

"Freedom is a fragile thing and is never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people. And when it is gone, it is gone forever."
—Ronald Reagan, January 5, 1967

Introduction

The Crisis Facing America

For nearly a century, America, once a beacon of freedom and human rights, has seen its foundations progressively erode. Abundant evidence confirms that the United States is in crisis. Hundreds of books and thousands of articles attest to this reality. Concurrently, many Americans have become corrupted:

·They view welfare as a constitutional right while rejecting corresponding personal responsibilities.
·They have lost patriotic cohesion and the strong will to protect and ensure the nation's prosperity.
·They have cultivated arrogance, believing themselves superior to time-tested traditional values; they assume that the familiar American way of life cannot be destroyed; they regard people who believe in God or abide by the law as trapped in outdated lifestyles, to be replaced by "more lenient and inclusive" approaches.
·They are gradually forgetting America's "Manifest Destiny," which once inspired millions of Americans to bravely fight and even sacrifice their lives to defend the freedoms we cherish.
·They are increasingly divided in almost every sphere. Communists and socialists exploit these divisions, pitting people against each other over politics, patriotism, religion, race, gender, income, and values. Adhering to personal beliefs can lead to job loss, demotion, punishment, and even the deprivation of equal legal protection and freedom.

As early as 1962, FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover stated: "In recent years, symbols of patriotism are often cast aside. Our national heroes are disparaged, and our history distorted. Is it shameful to pledge allegiance to our flag, sign loyalty oaths, or salute our national anthem? Is it disgraceful to encourage our children to recite the inspiring words of our founding fathers from 1776? Has it become offensive to say 'we believe in God' when proclaiming our love for our country?" "Historically, every strong nation has lived by ideals and perished when those ideals collapsed..."

Dangerous Precedents

Even more terrifying is that a new generation will accept the status quo as normal, unaware of how precious the lost freedoms truly are. Thomas Jefferson, a Founding Father, warned: "One precedent in favor of power is a precedent against liberty. It will be quoted and extended, and in time will be the cause of all the people becoming a miserable host of subjects, with no sense but of wrong and suffering."

Alexander Hamilton, another Founding Father, also foresaw the erosion of freedom: "The most common and durable source of factions has been the various and unequal distribution of property." He further stated that "it is a common observation, that a free people, too often, in their heat and transport of some violent crisis, are apt to introduce principles and precedents which, afterwards, prove fatal to themselves."
